Friday Evening Bridge League Rules

March 30, 2007

Overview:  There are several bridge clubs in the U.S. that successfully conduct team games in the form of a league. Masterpoints are earned for each win, plus placing in the overalls at the conclusion of the season. Typically leagues are run using the round robin format. Once everyone has played each other, the season is over. The rules of the league appear below:

League Format:

  • Teams will be created each week from the list of pairs that have signed up to play. The pairings are based on a pre-determined schedule.  Each pair will be teamed up with all other pairs once during the season.
  • The format of the league will be a weekly round robin.  There will be three 9-board matches each week.
  • The season will start on March 30th and run according to the published schedule.  Once each pair has played with each other pair the season will be compete.
  • Matches will be held approximately twice a month, see the attached schedule.
  • Masterpoints would be awarded as defined in ACBLscor
  • All matches will be scheduled to start at 7:00 PM on Friday Evenings at the Kalamazoo Bridge Center
  • Weekly entry fees remain at $5.00 per player.
  • In the event one or more players are unable to play on a scheduled date, they are responsible to find a substitute player to fill in.
  • The winners will be determined at the end of the last session, based on wins and losses.  In the event of a tie, victory points will be used to break the tie.

Matches:

  • The number of matches is dependent on the number of players participating in the league.  It looks like we will have 8 pairs, which translates to 7 sessions.
  • Each player will be given a schedule.
  • All teams are expected to be ready to start their match at the scheduled start time of 7:00 PM.

Absences:

  • In the event a player is absent and a substitute is not available, his or her pair receives no points for the session missed.  The pair they were scheduled to play with will receive an average plus result for the session.

League Oversight:

  • A league Commissioner will be responsible to oversee the league.  Alan Bau will serve as the Commissioner.

Irregularities:

  • We do not intend to have non-playing directors for any of these matches.

In the event a director is needed to handle an irregularity, a director not involved in the match will be called to make the ruling. In the unlikely event those involved disagree with the director's ruling, they have the option of appealing to the league commissioner, at the conclusion of the match. In the event the League Commissioner is somehow involved in the problem, then an alternate Director will be appointed to handle the matter. The league commissioner, or the appointed alternate has the final say on all rulings.

Rules Changes:

  • Once the league starts, rule changes can only be made with the approval of 100% of the players.

Conventions:

  • The General Convention Chart will be in effect for all matches.

Other Items:

  • This is intended to be a competitive event, however all players are expected to conduct themselves within the guidelines of Zero Tolerance and good sportsmanship.
  • The League Commissioner has final say in all matters pertaining to the league.
